2020-2021 Reopening Information

  • Dear Southern Community,

Please know that we are using guidance and regulations from both state and federal agencies to make decisions during these difficult times. The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) classifies our local COVID-19 community transmission as either low, moderate, or substantial on a weekly basis. Our community has been in the moderate range since August. The recommendation from PDE to return to full in-person instruction is when levels are in the low range for a consistent amount of time. Positive COVID-19 cases are on the rise in the area. Our hybrid model is the PDE recommended model for our local number of COVID-19 cases. This model is also the only way we can ensure six feet of social distancing in our classrooms. If our community’s classification changed to substantial, the guidance from PDE recommends a virtual-only learning model for our students. Click here for more information on this guidance.

Please know that we would love to have all our students back in our classrooms each and every day, but we must make decisions to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Our plan is, if positive COVID-19 numbers decrease and stay consistently within the low range, we would look to recommend a change in the learning model for Board approval. We understand changing the instructional model impacts our parents and students. We would not want to make more than one major change moving in and out of a hybrid/in-person model. We will continue to look at the data and possible changes moving forward. Please know that we want to bring our students back to school in-person as soon as it is safe to do so.

As always, we want to keep you informed and ensure time for parents to plan accordingly with any changes to our instructional model. We thank you for your continued patience, partnership, and flexibility during these very challenging times.

    Stay well,

    Dr. Sandra L. Lemmon

    Superintendent
